A Little Bit About Us
Prior to 1772 there was no organized fire protection in Glens Falls. Like many cities of the day the need for fire protection was realized and provided by volunteer fire companies or “Vigilance Committees” These served the community from 1772 to 1903 when a different direction was sought. Following the beginning of 1902, many persons of the community agitated for a paid fire department that was organized in 1903, with John Mack as chief. In addition to the paid firemen, the community also had “call men” who responded to box alarms. “Call men” were paid, but also fined $2, if they did not respond to a fire. In 1908, when Glens Falls became a city, the fire department equipment was all horse-drawn and consisted of a steam engine, a combination chemical and hose wagon at Ridge St Station and aerial ladder and a hose wagon at the South St. Station. The Firefighters of the City Glens Falls Fire Department have served the city faithfully from their initial origins in 1903 to today. They have transitioned from horse drawn equipment to the modern equipment of today’s age. Glens Falls Firefighters have operated out of two stations throughout their time. The first is the main station, referred to as “Ridge St.”, which has stood the test of time and is our oldest station. This serves as headquarters for the department. The second station has taken many forms and a couple different locations over the years. The current station is referred to as “Broad St” and serves as the second station. This station houses the aerial as well as an ambulance , engine and technical rescue trailers. The amount and level of services the fire department provides has changed over the years but our commitment and dedication to provide the best possible services for the community hasn’t changed since our inception in 1903.
